Hummingbird Feeders at Desert RobinFeeding Orioles and Hummingbirds

In Borrego Springs, three species of orioles and three species of hummingbirds are commonly seen. These brightly colored birds are a joy to watch in the garden. Of the orioles: Scott's is usually seen during the winter months, and Hooded and Northern visit during the spring and summer breeding season. Of the hummers: Anna's and Costa's are here year-round, and Rufous is often seen in February and August during migration.

Both orioles and hummingbirds are attracted to nectar feeders. Orioles need a place to perch and a larger opening than do hummingbirds. If bees might be attracted to the feeder, get one of the models with bee guards, All nectar feeders should be kept clean and the nectar should be fresh. This is especially important during hot weather so as to prevent algae growth and sugar-water fermentation.

While commercial nectar is available, a sugar-water solution can be made by combining one part white sugar with 4-6 parts water. Do not use honey or artificial sweetener. Store extra nectar in the refrigerator.

To make 5 cups of nectar:

1. Put 1 cup of sugar in a heat-safe bowl or container.
2. Add 1 cup boiling water.
3. Stir with a utensil until sugar is completely dissolved.
4 Add 1 cup of ice and stir until the ice is almost melted.
5. Add 3-4 cups of cold water and stir well.
6. D not add food coloring. The birds will be attracted to the color of the feeder.
7. Clean the feeder with hot water and rinse with cold water. Use a feeder mop to clean out bugs and algae.
8. Fill the feeder with nectar and secure the bottom section.
9. Hang the feeder outside: Enjoy your feathered neighbors.
